Every Kid Needs A Champion (©TED)

Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, "They don't pay me to like the kids." Her response: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like.'" A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level. Before you watch, think about the different qualities that a good teacher should have. Rank them from the most important to the least important in your notebook. After you watch, try to answer this question: What could be done to improve the relationship between educators and their learners? List as many ideas as you can.

Verbs Followed by Gerunds and Infinitives

In English, if you want to follow a verb with another action, you must use a gerund or infinitive (or sometimes the base verb). For example: We resumed talking. (gerund – verb + ing) I want to see a movie. (infinitive – to + base verb) There are certain verbs that can only be followed by one or the other, and these verbs should be memorized. Some verbs, however, can be followed by either gerund or infinitive with little or no change in their meanings. Finally, some verbs can be followed by either form, but they have a different meaning in either case. In this lesson, many of these verbs are listed for you to learn.

Active/Passive Voice

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known who or what is performing the action. So, in some cases, it would be a better option than active voice. An example could be formal cases such as articles in which we try to imply that the information matters more than the person who has done the research or written the article. That being said, let's take a closer look at active/passive voice.
